Lab Goals

I really enjoy working with students and it is the primary reason for me choosing the faculty life. My own mentors have had significant impact on my life and I want to pass that down by helping my students become independent researchers and professionals. I am committed to creating a fun, supportive and collaborative environment for research with two-way feedback-based communication.

Current University of Minnesota Students

If you are a current undergraduate, masters, or PhD student at UMN looking for research opportunities in machine learning and artificial intelligence, please don’t hesitate to email me. Please make sure to attach your CV in the email.

Prospective PhD Students

I am looking for PhD students who are interested in working on developing new artificial intelligence and machine learning methods driven by real-world science and engineering applications. All the application details are available here: https://cse.umn.edu/cs/phd-admissions. Please mention my name in your application if you are interested in working with me.

I especially encourage people from historically under-represented groups to apply.

Generally, I believe doing research in machine learning require following skills:

This list above also implies that it is not necessary to have a Computer Science undergraduate degree to do machine learning research. I encourage students from other technical degrees (Math, Physics, Statistics, Electronics/Electrical Engineering etc.) to apply if they have the above skills. These 1, 2 are a couple of representative papers from my research. Please read them to get a sense of my work. You are not expected to understand everything but this will give you a sense of the skills required.
